Today we had the honour of visiting Symbiosis projects in the Gazipur region.
Phil from Symbiosis met us on the way to Gazipur and guided us on our visits to two integrated projects. These projects take a select group of poor and very disadvantaged women from a village and teach them basic literacy, numeracy and health. Then they seed a group bank to enable members to borrow funds at reasonable rates to improve their lives. They all share in the profits of the group bank.
Each woman proudly told us their name and about their family and also what they have been able to do with the funds they have borrowed. One paid for a well, another bought a cow and another was building a house.
This is so much more than about a “project”, it is about real people making real progress in their lives and the lives of their family and community.
The whole village was so welcoming and saw us off together. The women wanted more photos to be taken with us.
At the second project it rained heavily and we were welcomed into the shelter of a house.
We then went to the regional office for lunch and met with the staff there.
Thanks to Symbiosis for the work they do and for the privilege of visiting these women.
